A National trust publication states, "the Rosenwald rural school building program which began in 1912 was a major effort to improve the quality of public education for African-Americans in the early 20th century south." Research shows that about 130 schools were built in Maryland of which seven (7) were built in Wicomico County. The Rosenwald School Initiative was successful in building these schools in a three-way partnership with the community, Julius Rosenwald, Chief Executive Officer of Sears and Roebuck and Booker T. Washington, President of Tuskegee Institute. In 2004, John Quinton Foundation became involved in a project to facilitate the historical preservation of the schoolhouse in its community of San Domingo. The schoolhouse, located on Old School Road, is a landmark that has represented the hope of the black community for centuries. the local, rural school lost its role as an "active" symbol of education when the school system changed through integration. While changes in public education have occurred, the rural community still regards its schoolhouse as a cherished institution with its place in the history of the country.
